Facebook Grant Giveaway: An Experiment in Crowd-Sourced Grantmaking

Top Vote Getter the NEGU Foundation to Receive $2,500 Grant

Facebook EventNewport Beach, Calif. (January 20, 2012) -- During the week of January 9 we tried a social media experiment—we encouraged our Facebook audience to be grantmakers. We asked the 770 people who ‘liked’ the Orange County Community Foundation on Facebook to name their favorite nonprofit in Orange County and to invite their friends to ‘like’ us and do the same. We promised that the nonprofit mentioned most would receive $1 dollar for every fan of OCCF’s page at the end of the week, up to $2,500.

People enthusiastically cast their votes for the organization they were most passionate about and encouraged their friends to do the same. Nonprofits used social media to mobilize their followers to take action as well. In one week’s time 2,600 new people ‘liked’ the Community Foundation and more than 6,600 votes were cast for 195 different Orange County nonprofits. We are excited to welcome these new people to the Community Foundation and appreciate the work the nonprofits did to bring them to us. We hope the relationship will continue.
Votes were tallied, duplicates removed (rules stated only one vote per person) and numbers confirmed by OCCF staff. In the end, the Never Ever Give Up (NEGU) Foundation was victorious with nearly 3,000 votes!
